History

Founded in 1998 by CEO Angelina Zayas, GAP Community Center began with a simple yet powerful mission: to help our community and unlock the potential within it. What started as a grassroots effort quickly grew into a movement of compassion, connection, and lasting change. From the very beginning, we believed that true transformation starts by showing up—consistently, intentionally, and with love.

In those early years, we served our neighborhood in every way we could—hosting annual events like our Christmas Store, organizing summer activities, and becoming a trusted, familiar presence that our neighbors could count on. We knocked on doors, listened to stories, and built relationships—one block, one family, one neighbor at a time. That groundwork eventually led us to a permanent home at 2100 N Kildare in Chicago, IL 60639, a space where our mission could take deeper root and expand in new, meaningful ways.

As our presence grew, so did our vision—especially for the next generation. Recognizing the importance of early investment in youth, we launched after-school programs in local schools like Nixon Elementary and CICS Bucktown. These programs offered more than just homework help—they provided mentorship, safe spaces to grow, and environments where young people could be seen, heard, and supported. Soon after, we developed a summer program for elementary and middle school students that blended fun, learning, and leadership development. That program didn’t just benefit the kids—it also created employment opportunities for local teens and young adults, giving them a sense of purpose, responsibility, and a positive path forward.

Over time, our reach multiplied. In partnership with Grace and Peace Church, we began to dream bigger and collaborate more intentionally. Together, we launched new initiatives and expanded our capacity to serve. As awareness of our work grew, so did the support. We formed powerful, lasting partnerships with organizations like Safe and Peaceful Chicago, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and the Health First Collaborative. These alliances allowed us to widen our impact and respond more effectively to the evolving needs of our community.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, a moment of global disruption that tested the strength of every community. At GAP, we didn’t back down—we leaned in. We adapted quickly, moving our food distribution outdoors to protect our neighbors and volunteers. Through new safety protocols and sheer determination, we continued serving over 200 families (more than 500 individuals) each day we were open. While many doors closed, GAP remained a steady and visible presence—a beacon of hope in a time of uncertainty. Our neighbors knew they could still count on us.

Today, with our building once again open to the public, we remain firmly rooted in our mission. We continue to provide critical support through our Choice Food Store, giving families the dignity of selecting their own groceries in a welcoming, community-centered space. We connect individuals with vital social services that address housing, employment, healthcare, and more. And we actively advocate for our community by hosting events like DMV drives, blood drives, CityKey events, and other civic engagement opportunities that empower residents and remove barriers.

But beyond programs and partnerships, what truly defines GAP is our unwavering commitment to people. We believe every person has value. Every family matters. Every neighbor holds untapped potential. And our greatest privilege is walking alongside them as that potential unfolds.

Our building is open again, and our mission remains the same: to unlock the potential in and with our community, one neighbor at a time. Whether through a bag of groceries, a word of encouragement, or a youth leader discovering their purpose—we’re here, showing up, and believing in what’s possible.
